PERSONALITY
greedy / megalomaniac What's his is his. If he sees something he wants, he takes it, end of story. This can be anything from an item to territory; the former can sometimes be problematic, but he's also determined, and is willing to even challenge others for their own possessions, especially if he considers himself more worthy of them. The latter, however, is what helped him become such a good Talon of Night-Eye: bearded vultures have expansive territories, and he is no exception. He's always looking for room to spread his metaphorical wings, and is constantly looking for excuses to help his tribe expand their borders. He is also very drawn to power, and often has delusions of grandeur that someday he will take over the tribe in place of its current chieftain. He dares not share his ambitions, however, and keeps them secret.
self-preserving Rathe is unafraid of combat, but if he senses that the odds have shifted against his or his tribe's favour, he's not opposed to the idea of retreat (whether his chieftain commands it or not). He also has a very good idea of social graces, and can be considered a word-smith; even if he holds an opinion that's dangerous to his position, he knows how to share it and allow it to be heard while still making it sound like he's being submissive. However, this trait is not always so noble - sometimes his avoidance of suffering or death has been known to make him appear cowardly.
violent / cold Whenever he does stick around for a fight, it's to kill. Human ideals of mercy and forgiving didn't find their places in his heart; instead he draws from a much more primal morality, and doesn't find any regret after slaughtering several individuals, even if they were innocent. He feels no pain whenever he's betrayed, or rejected, or even taunted; he continues as he was beforehand, paying the thought little attention. He also has difficulty experiencing any sort of remorse when even a friend or a loved one dies, unless he can use their deaths as an outlet for vengeance and a chance at mindless blood-sport. He's been known to be cruel, especially when it comes to animals.
intelligent Rathe is a clever creature, as is his avian counterpart, and has a large amount of intelligence at his disposal. This isn't to say that he can solve any problem that comes his way, but he's blessed with a gift for critical thinking that has been helpful many times in the past. He also enjoys building on this intelligence, and likes entertaining the idea of visiting the Remnant's library.
vulture Despite how human he seems, he still bases a large part of his instincts on his animal nature. He's a solitary sort, preferring to sleep, hunt, and spend his time alone or in extremely small groups - groups larger than five or six tend to make him irritable, and he uses any excuse to leave them and return to his solitude. He also has an extreme interest in the dead, and has been known to eat the flesh of the foes he defeats.
BRIEF HISTORY
There's not much to his story; not much that he's willing to share, at least. He was born to two vultures who found each other over a very long distance. Desperate for love and unable to wait for any other opportunities further on in life, they mated as soon as they met, both going to strenuous pains to put up with the other for the sake of the love that they crafted; they soon had a child, a single young boy they named Rathe. The fledgling, naturally, needed the attention of both mother and father, but the lack of care his parents held for each other soon affected his new life. Yearning impatiently to be solitary once more and return to their respective territories, they cared for Rathe for only the required time, a mere six years before both taking metaphorical flight and leaving him on his own.
Rathe, at first, was afraid. He, like any other offspring, longed for his mother and father, and would cry for them whenever it pained him the worst, whenever it was cold or whenever he was hungry and there was no one to feed him. He was looked down upon by the other individuals for being a scavenger, and while he wasn't necessarily expelled from society, he certainly wasn't accepted as much as, say...the Talons.
Ah, now there was a group he envied. He found their tales of adventure and daring and bloodshed riveting, and longed in youth to be one - no, not one. The best of them. THE Talon. He immediately set his sights on the position, and began training.
At first, like all pursuits, he didn't do very well. He was thin from his lacking childhood, and was easily beaten by the even slightly more experienced hunters. Again and again he was thwarted, even when he showed just a single glimmer of success. However, soon he learned another valuable skill, one that he couldn't be taught by the other hunters...how to cheat. He began learning small differences he could make to change the outcome of the fight; a slightly extended practice blade, a slick patch of mud under the opponent's talon to make him slip. At the beginning, he depending heavily on this cheating, but he simply used it to excel his own confidence and skill without always ending in failure. Eventually he reached the point where he played fairly, and success greeted him in even the most hopeless situations. Eventually, he became a hunter, and step one of his goal was completed.
A few years later, he was given the chance to prove himself in the heat of battle. One of the fish-men had crossed their territory, and Rathe was among the first to meet them with talons bared. It was meant to be only a territorial scrap, but it took a turn for the worse when one of the Night-Eye tribe slipped in his fight, and landed on the foe's weapon. Rathe, bloodthirsty and itching for an excuse, soon took the gillman's life and called it revenge... He cleared the dispute, and was awarded a ranking up for his valor. He was named one of the tribe's Talons, and step two was completed.
He still remains a Talon to this day, using every excuse he can to take what is rightfully his, biding his time until he can take Derai's place...one way or another.
