Tutorial 02: Colouring

Description

The second in a trio of tutorials I'm in the process of making, this time for how I colour. Decided to do Snakevoice, since the expression fit and he's got fun colouring to do x3

Colouring

1. Open your lineart. I cut off his body with a black line; you don't have to, but I made it easy for myself since my cat doesn't have a body, so there's not a complete lineart. Now click the magic wand tool (the thing I showed up there, I think) and click outside the black; it'll turn blue all around the black. For the selection I use either Strict Transparency or Colour Difference; it doesn't really matter, only that Strict Transparency is often smoother and leaves less pixels unselected, but it's your choice.

2. Go up to the Selection tab, then go down in the drop down menu and click "invert". Then choose the colour you want your thing to be, and either colour in everything selected or fill it with the bucket. It should be solid colour now; if not, tamper it however you want.

3. With the colour still selected, begin colouring, either on the same layer or a new one above the already coloured selection. I use an airbrush at a small size, on the same layer; since it's Snakevoice, he's got a line splitting colour down the middle of his face, but don't let that confuse you. In no case should he have a straight line directly down his face, because that'd be wrong; instead, draw the line according to his bones and stuff, like I've shown.

4. Either on a new layer, or any of the other colour layers you've done, I've started colouring in his little markings on either side of his face. I still use an airbrush, but a smaller one, with no minimum size and a changed shape from the rectangle to the little hill-looking thing; this makes it softer and you can use bunched, short strokes to make it look like fur.

5. Add on new colours until your character is done. Then deselect, and voila, you've got yourself a coloured Snakevoice. <3

Coming up is shading, but I'm going swimming so it has to wait...should be up tonight though. Enjoy~ <3
