Did you hear the one about the happy mortician?...

I didn't either.

:iconbeneath-our-fur:

Whoo I'm joining so many groups. xD This one is about an animal hospital, and of course, me poking around in the shrouds of darkness that I can't seem to stay away from, I decided to make the mortician :D I also noticed that all of the bipedal animals I draw that wear clothing look like hipster hobos...oops. =3=

Name
James Penn

Age
27 years

Gender
Male

Orientation
Bisexual

Rank
Mortician

Species
Dog - border collie

Property and Possessions
[Apartment] - 50$
[link]
The cheapest place James could afford after leaving the dean's manor. It's a small place in the city, just big enough to be comfortable for a single person with little need for social interaction. He lives on the third floor of his apartment building, but there's a walkway from the parking garage that leads directly to his floor's elevator; it's not the cleanest nor most reputable place of residence, but he keeps his space very clean, and there's always water and electricity. Someday he'd like a bigger place, but it's not a primary concern.

[Old Car, "Superman"] - 60$
[link]
A cheap, somewhat dingy '67 Mustang car that is so sucky and cheap that James affectionately calls it Superman. It has an off-black body colour with a dark brown material interiour, with a Superman decal on the back window. When he's off from work, he hangs his ID and lanyard on the rear view mirror, and he doesn't keep it nearly as clean as he does his house... The back seat is almost always full of stacks of papers, lumps of clothing, fast food trash and other items from his daily life; this is why he doesn't usually let people see his car, not to mention how unreliable of a car it is. Half the time its air conditioning doesn't work, and in the winter, it's notorious for sometimes not starting at all. Despite all of this, though, he loves it, and if anything happened to it he'd be devastated.

Department
Morgue

Personality
[Intelligent] l [Distrusting] l [Solitary] l [Awkward] l [Gentle]

[Intelligent]: He didn't go through years of medical school for no reason. This guy commits to human-species relativity and is just as clever as any border collie would be expected to be, and can be relied on to solve problems that some others find a bit more difficult. But he's not just clever; he has a memory like a steel trap, and is incredibly skilled at memorization, whether it's the words on a page or the location of objects in a room. He also has quite the eye for numbers, and while it may take him a moment, he can effectively crunch numbers no matter the digits.

[Distrusting]: As an almost direct result of his background, James finds it incredibly difficult to fully trust anyone with anything, especially things that relate to him personally. It's quite a chore getting him to open up to the most gentle, unobtrusive of people, much less anyone he's ever met around the hospital; to James, the more someone knows about him, the more likely it is that they'll stab his back in the end. In this aspect, he's very protective of himself. He could be the best of friends with someone for years and they'd never know a thing about him.

[Solitary]: James is the kind of dog that just prefers being by himself and in silence. This isn't to say that he's antisocial necessarily, but when the only company you keep for sometimes days at a time are a bunch of dead people, a guy tends to learn how to entertain himself; while he doesn't go out of his way to make sure he's always alone (like anyone else, sometimes he finds that he craves the companionship of another living soul), he doesn't have any qualms with spending weeks without talking to anyone. Needless to say, he's pretty good at running the hospital's morgue.

[Awkward]: Put simply, sometimes he spends so much time around the dead that he forgets how to effectively interact with the living. He's been known to forget his manners, and occasionally when engaged in conversation, he accidentally has these bouts of silence that usually have to be broken by the other person involved: he's not rude by any means, however, and when he catches himself displaying these behaviours he's pretty quick to apologize.

[Gentle]: There are few souls as gentle as James'. Both as a result of his profession as well as his nature as a sentient being, he's very sweet, and has a somewhat heightened sense of the people around him, especially when it comes to sensing sadness; when your loved one has passed on, you can bet that James will be one of the first to offer consoling, and he's been known to sit with people for hours at the deathbed of their beloved, sharing their precious few breaths as part of the mourning...he also has the tendency to comfort those who have no one else to be with in their time of sickness, and when he's not busy in the morgue he sometimes likes to simply walk a round through the hospital rooms and make sure the sick, dying, or even recovering are accounted for and have a friend to spend time with.

Brief History
Born the only child to a struggling couple living in New York, James' life was hard from the very beginning. His mother died in a car accident when he was only a small puppy, leaving behind a questioning child and a hostile, unstable father; every evening when he got home from work, he would drink himself into oblivion, and the only outlet for his rage and overwhelming sadness was his son. Depressed to the point of madness, his father would yell at James, call him a good for nothing, call him a curse to his existence. He was the reason his wife was dead, he would say, and the evenings were stained red with his rage... James can't remember a time when his father wasn't abusive, and even to this day his body is riddled with small scars from where his father had stricken him with a bottle or fist. The only solace James could find was when his dad would drink himself into a deep sleep, and he would quietly leave the house and walk to the cemetery where his mother was buried...he would spend long hours by her tombstone, talking to her and any neighbouring dead that would listen to his misery, often spending entire nights curled up on the mound of dirt that marked her body; this is where his love for the deceased had flourished. The living were capable of such righteous anger and madness and inflicted such pain, but the dead were always so kind and quiet...they never raised their fists or screamed insults at him, and they listened whenever he wanted to laugh or scream or simply just cry into the night. This was when he discovered that he wanted to be a mortician, so he could spend long days and nights surrounded by the only companions he had ever known.
This life continued until James' eighteenth birthday, when he was finally old enough to make his own decisions apart from his father. He left even without any money or direction, simply taking a week's worth of food and a scarf in case he got cold; he was homeless for several months, living in alleyways with nowhere to go and no one to account to...one morning, however, he got lucky, and as he sat on the corner of the avenue to scrape together some coins for food, a car pulled up with a very interesting character inside. A tall, older cat of elegant bearing, with a kind face that told of smiles even when his face was straight...he introduced himself as Brian Gate, the headmaster of a university in Rochester. A merciful soul, he decided to take the young collie in, provided he secured a real paying job and move out as soon as he was able; James took the offer gratefully, and for the next several years lived with the cat, landing several low-pay jobs and attending the university on the headmaster's salary. He proved to have an eye for the medical arts, and pursued a degree in mortuary science, fulfilling his end of the agreement and keeping up his own standard of living as he finished every second of school presented. True to his word, he moved out as soon as he got a job as the BoF mortician and was making a sustainable salary that he could live off of; he now lives in a small flat, devoting his life to his career and not taking one second of Gate's time for granted.
